Translated from the Russian by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. Over the past few weeks, there's been an ongoing discussion of the new Pevear and Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace in the NY Times Reading Room. We're using the Pevear-Volokhonsky translation, but feel free to take up any of the available translations. I am about 1000 or so pages into the recent, Pevear-Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace. James Wood reviews the new translation of War and Peace in The New Yorker. I'd remembered reading an article in The New Yorker on Constance Garnett and “Translation Wars.” I remember that the article led me to purchase the Rosemary Edmonds' translation of War and Peace. Fortunately, conversations with a friend and some online sleuthing of pages 823 to 825 of the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation revealed to me the French army, battered, bleeding and hiding in Moscow. Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky's translation gives us new access to the spirit and order of the book. It's a little strange to see War and Peace at 50 and no Anna Karenina or Crime and Punishment in sight given they're generally the more popular translated texts. The Stieg Larsson books, the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation of “War and Peace,” and Laurie Sheck's “A Monster's Notes,” to name just a few (many more from his portfolio are delightfully catalogued on his Web site). War and Peace published by Penguin Classics is translated by Anthony Briggs. I've since read the Pevear/Volokhonsky translations of Anna Karenina and War and Peace, and have their translation of The Brothers Karamazov sitting on my to-be-read shelf. Two years ago I read a fresh translation by the couple Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky of Leo Tolstoy's epic War and Peace. Vintage Classic, New York, 2008. The War and Peace Reading Support Group begins on Monday, but we will start reading the Tolstoy this weekend. In this case (War and Peace), the Kindle edition is NOT the translation that's mentioned in the product description (Pevear and Volokhonsky). The list would have been a little more helpful if they had included the publisher The Pevear and Volokhonsky translations of Tolstoy's works, they say, goes a long way in diminishing the intimidation factor of Leo Tolstoy.
